Lisa Firke creates acrylic paintings using a technique similar to the Old Masters’ grisaille style of painting. She begins with a black canvas and paints a white underpainting on it. Next, she adds multiple layers of translucent color until she achieves the desired effect.
She categorizes her work as “folk modern” for the way it resembles Mid-20th Century styles and decorative crafts like embroidery and Tole painting.
Customer favorites include her Topiary series depicting animals made from shrubs and vine and her Books & Ladders series which shows children reading in trees and other imaginary settings.
Today, Lisa works out of the home she lived in as a child where she finds renewed inspiration for the themes and imagery that populated her childhood.
