Phyllis Fitzpatrick has been creating and selling her artwork since elementary school. While working for the Baltimore Zoo she would frequently paint murals for various exhibit areas. One day in the 1990’s, she was asked to paint animals on an ostrich egg which would be presented as a gift to then Governor William Donald Schaefer.
Soon other zoo employees and their friends and family wanted her egg art too. Each egg is hand painted from scratch with acrylic paint. The shells are thicker than other eggs which makes them sturdy enough to paint on. She gets her eggs from various ostrich ranches in the southwest. The ranches drill a hole in the infertile eggs to drain them and then ship them to her in Maryland. Come say hello at the next Sugarloaf Crafts Festival and see these amazing egg paintings up close!
