George Gatsoulas / George's Handmade Woodcrafts

wood / functional wood

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

George Gatsoulas learned furniture making while working in his father’s cabinet shop in Greece. He also attended technical school to study design. He came to the United States at the age of 25 and continued making high end cabinets for several decades. After he retired, he spent several months learning how to make the small bandsaw boxes he sells at craft shows today. In his mind, he simply went from making big cabinets to little cabinets.

He uses imported and domestic hardwoods. George says he puts a lot of fantasy into his designs. His miniature cabinets have drawers that fan out on each side. On some, the tiny drawers are shaped to resemble the flames of a crackling fire. These boxes are great conversation pieces but they’re also useful for holding jewelry and small trinkets.
