As a geology student at WVU, Annie Morris Simcoe loved exploring the rural landscape of Maryland and West Virginia. In 2003, she decided she would make the paper she’d use for her Christmas cards.

She collects corn husks, iris leaves, rye grass and other fibers from her own and her friends’ gardens and from fields and woods near her home in Western Maryland.

During the papermaking process, she adds plant dyes to achieve the vibrant colors founds in her designs. Once the paper is finished and dry, Annie arranges the pieces in a design and secures them with glue. She ‘draws’ the final image with her sewing machine. She describes her work as ‘quilted collage.’
